Welcome new Chapter members!

There are so many ways to be involved: attending meetings, volunteering, or joining one of our working groups/committees. We have committees working on Climate Education in Schools, Climate-Friendly Food, Renewable Energy and Plastic Reduction. Please fill out this interest form to let us know if you are interested in one of these (or if there is a climate solution you would like to be involved in that is not listed). We'll be in touch!

We need people to join our leadership team!
Only one virtual meeting/month commitment. Please email climaterealityportland@gmail.com

Do Individual Actions Matter?

Tuesday, October 19, 7 pm

Many of us question- do our individual actions matter when most carbon emissions are from the fossil fuel industries? Does it really change anything for people to reduce their own carbon footprints instead of focusing on changing Federal policy?

Climate Reality Leader Kate Gaertner is Founder and CEO of TripleWin Advisory, a Corporate Sustainability Consultant who also leads workshops about individual sustainability and has recently written a book called "Planting a Seed: 3 simple steps to sustainability." She makes a compelling case that we need to act on all levels and that all of us are stakeholders.

Bring your questions as we explore this sometimes controversial topic that arises in climate circles.

We will also be discussing special chapter news and committee updates.

URGENT: A Climate Response Policy for Portland Public Schools

PUBLIC COMMENT NOW OPEN- Deadline is October 18!

This policy is one of the most comprehensive district climate response policies in the nation, requiring significant changes to decrease emissions, educate students about climate science and climate justice, and prepare our community for the impacts of a changing climate. It touches every staff and every school in PPS.

Portland Public Schools is asking for community input and feedback on our Climate Crisis Response Policy.

When you are ready to give feedback, please fill out this online feedback form OR email your comments directly to sustainability@pps.net.***You can also call 503-741-9595 and leave your comments via voicemail there. Please share with students, parents, teachers, neighbors, and community organizations! We believe that fighting climate change takes a global community, and at Portland Public Schools, it takes all of us working together. That's why we need your input! The more input we have from the community, the better we think the policy will be and the more excitement there will be about working to implement it together. If you would like translation or accessibility services, please email sustainability@pps.net.

Legislative Action: Put a price on carbon

From our friends at Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL):
Please go to cclusa.org/white-house now to help this crucial effort - it takes a few minutes. We need President Biden to encourage Senators right now to support a price on carbon in budget reconciliation.

Does it make a difference? Here's what CCL VP of Government Affairs Danny Richter said last week: “This is a really big moment for us and for our advocacy. A carbon price was not in the Democrats’ outline of their budget plans earlier this summer. And now, after you and your networks made 54,000 calls and emails to the Senate, it is being given serious consideration by the Senate Finance Committee.”

You can, with a little effort, multiply your impact. Can you encourage one other person to act? Decide how many you'll shoot for. If it's just you, that's great.

Helpful tips for encouraging others (use whatever works for you):

  • Tell them you have a favor to ask,
  • It's OK to say no (this really helps!),
  • “Can you help me with a goal?"
  • Tell them briefly why you think it's important, how simple it is to act,
  • If they say yes, give them the link cclusa.org/white-house. Ask them to let you know when they've acted, and feel free to follow up until they do. Don't be surprised if people thank you for your work and for reminding them!
